Stripping An Asbestos Roof
When stripping an asbestos roof from a factory or warehouse, there are a number of health and safety considerations.
The nature of asbestos cement means that it becomes brittle with age and it’s highly likely, that even with the most careful roofing contractor, that some debris will fall to the space beneath the roof.
In cases where the area is unoccupied, this is less of a problem in terms of danger from falling objects, but care must still be taken to minimise risks of contamination from fibre release.
When stripping an asbestos cement roof, it’s usual practice to place nets at high level, not only to reduce the danger of falling debris, but also to protect the workforce above!

This is a double-netting safety system. The netting protects against personnel and debris falling into the space below. Allow around £4 per square metre for hire.
In most re-roofing and over-cladding projects, the roof will need to be double-netted but some buildings are more difficult than others and in addition to the cost of netting, provision might need to be made to temporarily remove or redirect lighting. This kind of issue will be identified in our survey and if we are managing the project, noted in the tender documentation.
Occasionally, it proves impossible to net an area so alternative safety systems have to be put in place. We can help clients in this critical health and safety area.
We have managed several re-roofing projects, some of which required continuous working throughout and would be pleased to advise on any aspect of this work.
