Type 2 Asbestos Management Surveys
Following the publciation of the Health & Safety Executive’s HSG 624 (Asbestos: The Survey Guide), the type 2 asbestos survey is now referred to as the “Asbestos Management Survey.”
For ease of reference for those unfamiliar with the new terminologyu, we have kept all references to type 1, type 2 and type 3 asbestos surveys on these pages.
The type 2 asbestos survey is also known as a full sampling survey and, as this suggests, the asbestos surveyor will take samples of each material that is suspected of containing asbestos.
The samples are analysed in a UKAS accredited laboratory and a certificate is produced that either confirms or excludes the presence of asbestos.
The certificates are included in the asbestos register for future reference.
A type 2 asbestos survey will be more expensive than a type 1 because of the time it takes to actually sample the materials and because of the larger number of samples required.
In most cases however, there is no need to have a full type 2 survey and significant savings can be made by having a type 1 survey with selective sampling of only certain materials.
The type 2 asbestos survey, like the type 1, is mainly a visual survey and no damage is made to the fabric of the building and only immediately accessible areas are surveyed.
