Type 3 Asbestos Surveys (Demolition Surveys)
Following the publciation of the Health & Safety Executive’s HSG 264 (Asbestos: The Survey Guide), the type 3 asbestos survey is now referred to as the “Demolition or Refurbishment Survey.”
For ease of reference for those unfamiliar with the new terminology, we have kept all references to type 1, type 2 and type 3 asbestos surveys on these pages.
The type 3 asbestos survey is required on commercial premises that are to undergo major refurbishment or demolition.
The aim of the type 3 survey is to protect construction workers from accidental exposure to asbestos.
It is important that all areas of the building are accessed and during a type 3 survey, the surveyor will open up areas in partition walls, ceilings and voids in order to determine whether asbestos containing materials are present.
In some cases, a major refurbishment project will be confined to only one or two areas of a building and the type 3 asbestos survey can be restricted to these areas in order to reduce costs, with the rest of the building reverting to a type 1 or 2 survey.
