Asbestos Testing & Sampling
An asbestos cement roof, guttering and down pipes are fairly easy to identify as being asbestos, because most of us are familiar with the products and know what they look like.
In normal circumstances, asbestos cement products present no real danger to health and there are usually no issues when working in buildings with asbestos roofs.
Other products containing asbestos may present a greater risk and some of these products may be harder to identify and this is what presents the danger in the workplace.
In cases where you suspect that a product might contain asbestos or be made from asbestos, you would be well advised to get that product tested for asbestos presence.
The products of most significance are asbestos insulation boards and older pipe and boiler lagging.
If disturbed or damaged, these materials present significant risk to health and could result in areas of your premises being sealed off until they are removed.
So before working on such materials, it’s better to identify them for what they are. Even if a sample result comes back negative, it is still better than taking an unnecessary risk and can actually be useful in proving that a material does not contain asbestos – for example, when dealing with waste companies.
